Regulations for the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships are contained in Annex V of MARPOL. Garbage from ships can be just as deadly to marine life as oil or chemicals. The greatest danger comes from plastic, which can float for years. Fish and marine mammals can in some cases mistake plastics for food and they can also become trapped. Marine life is an important part of the ecology and human have disturbed the ecology by polluting marine life. We are continuously contaminating sea water by releasing a huge variety of waste from various sources such as industrial waste, agricultural waste, oil spilling, ocean mining etc. There are various species of plants & animals that are living in the sea water and gets affected .

Marine Pollution Christopher L. J. Frid and Bryony A. Caswell. Covers the field of marine pollution from old problems to upcoming challenges and so provides the reader with a complete guide to marine pollution; Clear structure with multiple headings and text boxes to emphasise key examples so the reader can find what they want easily. Pollution has been associated with reductions in the densities, biomass and number of species in marine systems (e.g. Johnston and Roberts, ) and reductions in ecosystem function (Breitburg et al., ; Gonzalez et al., ; Johnston et al., ; Mayer-Pinto et al., in review).

Marine pollution is a growing problem in today’s world. Our ocean is being flooded with two main types of pollution: chemicals and trash. Chemical contamination, or nutrient pollution, is concerning for health, environmental, and economic reasons.
This type of pollution occurs when human activities, notably the use of fertilizer on farms, lead to the runoff of. According to the United Nations Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Pollution, the amount of ocean dumping actually brings in less pollution than maritime transportation, atmospheric pollution, and land based pollution like run-off.
However, when waste is dumped it is often close to the coast and very concentrated. Marine pollution occurs when harmful effects result from the entry into the ocean of chemicals, particles, industrial, agricultural and residential waste, noise, or the spread of invasive percent of marine pollution comes from land.
Air pollution is also a contributing factor by carrying off pesticides or dirt into the ocean. Land and air pollution have proven to be. The projects included removal of abandoned vessels, dilapidated piers, and debris piles containing hazardous waste containers, oil tanks, lead-based paints, asbestos, marine batteries and e-wastes, among many other contaminants and solid waste.

Chapter (PDF Available) January with 7, Reads How we measure 'reads'. “In the North Sea, one of the world’s busiest areas for shipping, up to 40% of marine litter comes from the maritime sector.
In Europe, it has been estimated that aro tonnes of waste is dumped each year in the North Sea. In the Netherlands as much as 90% of the plastic found on beaches originates from shipping and fisheries.”. NOTING that marine pollution originates in many sources, such as dumping and discharges through the atmosphere, rivers, estuaries, outfalls and pipelines, and that it is important that States use the best practicable means to prevent such pollution and develop products and processes which will reduce the amount of harmful wastes to be disposed of.
Marine Pollution is aimed at senior undergraduates, masters and graduate level students studying marine sciences. It will also serve as a useful reference for researchers and professionals working in the fields of environmental management, marine planning, marine environmental regulation and protection, as well as those working for government.

Marine pollution occurs today in varied forms--chemical, industrial, and agricultural-and the sources of pollution are endless.
In recent history, we've seen oil spills, untreated sewage, eutrophication, invasive species, heavy metals, acidification, radioactive substances, marine litter, and overfishing, among other significant problems/5.
Persistent problems associated with land-based sources of pollution, along with other issues including the over-exploitation of coastal resources, continue to degrade the global marine environment. 2 At the start of a new Millennium it is timely to review marine waste disposal and assess the factors which may influence its application and Author: Rhoda Catherine Ballinger.

Pollution of the marine environment by ships, including fishing vessels, is strictly controlled by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (known as MARPOL). To minimise pollution, MARPOL prohibits ships from discharging garbage into the sea except in very limited circumstances.
